the sell-out administration

Please read this opinion piece from the New York Times. Then read the rest of this post.

I long ago said that I didn't think Obama was as pro-GLBT equality as Hillary was, waaaaay back in the primaries. Now, the GLBT community seems shocked at not only the silence of the Obama Administration on the issue of equality but the Administration's actions against GLBT persons, from support of the Defense of Marriage Act to Don't Ask, Don't Tell (Don't Get Me Started!). I would like to add my voice to the chorus of disappointed GLBT persons and their allies. I cannot imagine the Justice Department issuing a statement that it was natural for the Confederate States of America to "favor [slavery/Jim Crow/separate but equal]" because it is the "traditional and universally recognized form of [social caste systems].” Who would let that stand? But we are more than willing to stand idly by while our country takes a step backward, away from equality for all. I am not really that into gay marriage, as I'm not sure how I feel about marriage in general (at least at this point in my life), but for those who value marriage and fidelity and all the rest of that good stuff, this matters to me. I am so saddened and outraged that this so-called progressive government, which is proving to be an Administration of a lot of talking and selling out, doesn't seem to really believe in progress for everyone.
